PRSA-Madison 2011 Alchemy Awards Recap
UW-Extension Earns Top PR Honor
PRSA
picks the Wisconsin protestors as “Communicators of the Year”
Madison, Wis. (October 20, 2011) –
The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA-Madison) presented its highest
honor to the UW Colleges/UW-Extension for a media relations campaign to
announce a federal grant to extend broadband Internet service to outlying Wisconsin
communities. University relations manager Teri Venker accepted the award
October 20 at a luncheon at Madison’s Hilton Hotel. It was the 10th annual
Alchemy Awards, which recognizes the highest standards and accomplishments in
public relations.
PRSA also chose the Wisconsin
protestors for its annual Communicator of the Year award for their mobilization
in response to the budget repair bill and their success at getting their voices
heard in Wisconsin and throughout the nation.
In announcing the award, PRSA
Madison Board Member Mary Erpenbach said, “In the span of only one week, the
Wisconsin protesters went from completely unknown to statewide media
saturation, to an international story that continued to grow for weeks and
reverberates today, eight months and seven continents later.” She also
identified their successful social media tactics, using Facebook, YouTube,
blogs and texts to shape their messages and spread their news. Today, 9,000
videos on YouTube are tagged “Wisconsin protests.”
The awards ceremony showcased
outstanding public relations campaigns and communication tactics created by
numerous Madison organizations this year.
